Jeanne Antide Thouret
The Sisters of Charity of St. Jeanne Antide are an international community in the Vincentian tradition founded on April 11, 1799 by Joan Antide Thouret in Bençanson. She was a former Daughter of Charity. Joan Antide Thouret was born November 17, 1765 in Sancey-le-Long near Besançon France.

In 1787, at the age of 22, she entered the Company of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul desiring to live a life of prayer, community life and service to the poor.

During the French Revolution all Communities of Priests and Sisters were disbanded and sent back to their hometowns. Joan Antide joined other groups of religious but none of them met her needs.

She was invited back to Besançon to begin work among the people of her diocese. She accepted the invitation and on April 11, 1799 opened a free school for the education of girls. She also visited the sick and opened a soup kitchen to feed the poor. And thus began what is now known as the Sisters of Charity of St. Joan Antide, an international community in the Vincentian tradition. This legacy continues to this day in responding to the cries of the poor.

In 1810, the King of Naples, having founded several houses in France, called her. She soon left with some Sisters to start the Community in Italy. She died August 24, 1826 in Naples.

The Sisters of Charity of St. Joan Antide arrived in the United States in 1932 where they ministered to Italian immigrants in Milwaukee, Wisconsin during the height of the depression.

Community life, the Eucharist and the Paschal Mystery are basic in their lives.

Joan Antide Thouret (Jeanne Antide Thouret) was beatified by Pius XI May 23, 1926 and canonized January 14, 1934.
